How to Improve SAT II Physics subject test score by 100 points in 4 weeks: Notes from a parent

My son took SAT exams last year hoping to attend a good college in America. He did pretty well in general SAT, but needed to do two SAT subject tests, which were required by the universities he was applying to. He did quite well in Maths, however scored poorly in Physics, 680 to be exact and he decided to retake the test. His target was 800 as Physics was his favorite subject at school. However since we live in Australia and the curriculum for Physics is very different to the American one and SAT classes/tutors do not exist here. He had no choice but asking me for help. I can't remember that he has ever asked me for help with study. :)

We sat down and made a plan for the next 4 weeks. I'm not a physics teacher, but I'm an engineer, so I have some good understanding of the subject. I read his SAT books and wrote down some notes. I made sure he worked on SAT physics 1-2 hours a day and covered each subject at least twice. We went through my nodes everyday to make sure he's confident with the topic he studied that day. He also took at least 5 different practice test before the exam day, some of them, he took more than once.

So he re-took the Physics exam in Oct 2011 and scored 780. It wasn't the perfect 800 that he was hoping for, but still it was 100 mark improvement, which we both felt very proud of.

This month he was admitted to one of the HYPSM universities. We don't know exactly how much the improved SAT result has effected the admission decision, we know for certain it has made him a stronger applicant to those highly selective schools.

To date, we are still very thrilled by what we did together to achieve this outstanding result and we'd like to share this experience with everyone, which might help someone that is in the similar situation.
